Authorship

This policy defines who qualifies as an author of an article in IJES : Indonesian Journal of Environmental Sustainability, the role of the corresponding author, and how changes to authorship are handled.

Authorship criteria

Each person listed as an author must meet all of the following:

  1. A substantial contribution to the conception or design of the work, or to the collection, analysis, or interpretation of the data.
  2. Drafting the manuscript or revising it critically for important intellectual content.
  3. Approval of the final version to be published.
  4. Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work, including its accuracy and integrity.

Everyone who meets these criteria must be listed as an author. The journal does not set a maximum number of authors. People who contributed but do not meet all criteria (for example, technical help, field assistance, language editing, or general supervision) are named in the Acknowledgements with their consent.

Not acceptable

Guest or gift authorship

Ghost authorship

Leaving out a person who meets the criteria.

AI as author

AI tools cannot be authors (see AI Policy).

Author contribution statement

Every article includes an Author Contributions statement describing the role of each author. The journal recommends the CRediT taxonomy, for example: Conceptualization, Methodology, Investigation, Formal analysis, Writing – original draft, Writing – review & editing, Supervision.

Corresponding author

The corresponding author communicates with the journal on behalf of all authors, makes sure that all authors have approved the submission and every revision, and ensures that the declarations are complete and correct.

Changes to authorship

  • Before acceptance: any addition, removal, or change in the order of authors requires a written request from the corresponding author explaining the reason, with the signed agreement of all authors, including any author being removed.
  • After acceptance: changes are made only in exceptional cases and with the editor's approval.
  • After publication: changes are made only through a correction (see Correction and Retraction).

Authorship disputes are handled under the Research Misconduct policy. The journal does not decide disputes itself and may refer them to the authors' institutions.
