Abstract

Legal theory is a fundamental component in legal studies that examines the meaning, function, and role of law in society. The study of legal theory is not limited to written legal rules but also encompasses the explanation of legal concepts and principles, as well as how the law is applied in practice. This article aims to examine the definitions of legal theory according to legal scholars and classify the types of legal theories, with a primary focus on normative and empirical legal theories. Through this review, it is expected that students and academics can understand the basic concepts of legal theory as an essential foundation for studying law comprehensively.
