Abstract

Seiring dengan banyaknya kerusakan masyarakat disebabkan pengaruh kolonialis dan budaya asli Indonesia, maka bangkitlah gerakan purifikasi Islam yang dipimpin oleh Syeikh Muhammad Djamil Djambek (1860-1947), Abdul Karim Amrullah (1879-1945) dan Haji Abdullah Ahmad (1878-1933) di Sumatera Barat. Selanjutnya K.H. Ahmad Dahlan di Jogjakarta mendirikan Muhammadiyah pada tahun 1912 sebagai upaya untuk malakukan pembaruan dalam pemikiran Islam.
