This article examines ihdād (mourning period for wives who have lost their husbands) from the perspective of the Compilation of Islamic Law (KHI) and the Hanafi School of Law, with a focus on its operationalization in the modern era. Using a juridical-normative and comparative approach, this study systematizes texts, articles of the KHI, and the Hanafi corpus (al-Hidāyah, Badā’i‘ al-Ṣanā’i‘, Radd al-Muḥtār) through the lens of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah and qawā‘id fiqhiyyah (mashaqah-taysīr, ḍarūrah/ḥājah, ‘ādah muḥakkamah). The main findings indicate that the essence of ihdād is not a total prohibition of cosmetics, but rather the ethics of mourning to maintain honor, emotional stability of grief, and social order. Tazayyun (attractive ornamentation) is prohibited, while tahdhīb/tandhīf (essential care: cleanliness, tidiness, health) is permitted. The Indonesian Compilation of Islamic Law (KHI) provides a legal framework for Indonesia but lacks technical details; the Hanafi tradition provides operational measurement tools (intention, professional ‘urf, level of need) so that the two complement each other. This article offers a 4P test model (Purpose, Presentation, Place, Proportionality), a grooming typology (ornamental vs. essential), as well as do's and don'ts and exit protocols due to ḥājah for campus/office and digital spaces. The contribution of this research lies in providing practical guidelines that are both sharia-compliant and contextual, which can be adopted as micro-policies in educational/work institutions without obscuring the spirit of sharia ihdad.
