According to Imam al-Nawawī, inserting anything into the body cavity can break the fast, including medicine. Imam Ibn Ḥazm stated that medicine is not food or drink, so taking medicine does not mean fast-breaking. Based on these two opinions, asthma patients who use Ventolin inhalers can conclude as having broken their fast because they have eaten or put something into the body cavity. These two opinions raised legal uncertainty, even though ventolin inhalers are a primary need for asthma patients. It is the reason to conduct normative legal research on these two opinions using a comparative approach. The author examines these two opinions from the perspective of Fiqh al-Ikhtilāf. It places the differences between the two possible options; maybe they are contradictions or even diversity. This study found that differences occur at the paradigmatic level. Ibn Ḥazm adheres to a monism that normative-textual paradigm, so he rejects al-qiyās. Meanwhile, al-Nawawi adheres to a dualism that moderates the paradigm, so he accepts both the text and al-qiyās.
